Having gone through last season unbeaten, three players stepping up from the Charlton Women’s under 16s team are hoping to help the senior squads push further on this campaign.

Goalkeeper Alex Baker, central midfielder Mia Sellar and attacker Kit Graham all continued their pre-season preparation by playing in a friendly against Ebbsfleet at Sparrows Lane last week and, having played their part, spoke to about the coming season.

“Last season was brilliant,” stopper Baker said. “Going all season unbeaten was amazing. I didn’t have that much to do through the season but I am getting back into the swing of things in training now.

“Hopefully we can match what we did last season. I played a few reserve games last season and they had a really good squad. Hopefully our under 16s can strengthen that and go on to better things.”

After a successful season at all levels last term, Charlton have a wealth of competition in every position for the senior sides and the trio are hoping to learn from their competitors and push their way into the starting line ups.

“There have been a few really good goalkeepers come in this season, a lot of whom are older than me so I can look up to them as role models and learn off them to get my confidence up,” Baker added.

Setting out her targets for the season, Sellar said: “First team would be the target but there are a lot of central midfielders so I will start off wherever really and just get as much game time as possible.

“We all look out for each other but the other girls have been really welcoming and we have all been learning a lot from some of the older ones.

“[Pre-season] has been hard because I am not used to it but it hase been good. I needed to get fitter and it has helped with that.”

Striker Graham, who is currently 15-years-old and unable to play competitive senior football until November, is highly rated and bagged plenty of goals for the U16s last season.

She is also now looking forward to the new season, explaining: “I will play with the under 17s and then work really hard to get into the reserves, and maybe first team.”

“Through the season I am just looking to improve. It is a higher tempo, it is going to be hard but I will try. The game is faster, which could be difficult to get used to but hopefully I will get there.

“It will be good to play with them, obviously we have lost players but the ones coming up are good enough to improve.”
