Toni Alden believes the Charlton women’s team will be able to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Coventry on Sunday when they face Reading this weekend.

Alden, who is just two games away from a half-century of appearances for the Addicks, picked up PHSC plc’s Player of the Match award for her performance having impressed in defence.

The full back was left disappointed with the defeat but has backed her team mates to turn things around in the next match.

“We conceded an early goal, which was a stupid goal to give away, and then we just couldn’t recover. We had most of the ball and had plenty of chances but we just couldn’t take them,” she said.

“We are obviously disappointed but we are a strong team, we have a good bunch here now so I think we will recover, move on and play better next week.

“I think that maybe a bit of complacency crept in from last week, because we got a good result against Nottingham Forest but in this league anyone can beat anyone so we just have to make sure we don’t look too far ahead.”

The game against the Royals this coming Sunday (Sept 4) will bring back some happy memories for Charlton, having beaten them in last season’s FA Women’s Cup on penalties.

Alden feels the familiarity both teams have with each other, having met thrice in the last couple of years, means it will be an exciting game.

“We have Reading [next], who we played last year and the year before so we know what they are about and hopefully we can bounce back and give them a good game.

“I think all the players kind of know of each other and it is always competitive so it should be a good game.”
