The Charlton women’s team are delighted to welcome defender Ruby Southgate to the club, after joining from West Ham United on Tuesday.
And, after putting pen to paper, the right back told us she is raring to go and hopes to prove herself and push for a first-team starting place.
She said: “I can’t wait to start training – I’ve had a week off so I’m raring to go now. Obviously I’ll have to work hard at proving myself. It’s a fresh start and nobody here really knows how I play.
“I’ll need to get used to the way Charlton play so just see if I can get as far as possible, maybe get into the first team if possible.”
The 21 year old is one of a number of former Hammers now plying their trade with the Addicks. Ruby admitted the players she spoke to sold the club to her.
And, after a long time with her former side, she is looking forward to a new challenge in south-east London.
“A lot of the girls from West Ham have come and joined and they’ve been giving good reports and said how good it is,” she added.
“I wasn’t really enjoying my football at West Ham so I wanted to come here and enjoy playing again.
“I have been at West Ham for six years so I just thought it was time to move on, to hopefully bigger and better things.”
The former Leyton Orient centre of excellence graduate attended the opening game of the season between her old and news teams, explaining she liked what she saw.
Furthermore, having played at FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division level for the past five seasons, she sees the potential to push on and win the league.
“I went to watch the West Ham v Charlton game and was very impressed with the girls and I came to training on Thursday last week and spoke to the girls.
“Everyone seems really nice so that’s a good start. It seems like everyone is a nice, close-knit group, which will be nice to join.
“I think we probably have a good enough squad here to win the league from what I have seen and hopefully I can help.”
