And the new recruit spent little time outlining her ambitions for the season with her new club, saying: “I want us to win the league.”

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder spent just over a year with Gillingham in two spells, with a short stint at Millwall Lionesses sandwiched in between.

Whinnett has been on the books of some of the biggest women’s football clubs in the country, starting her career aged six with hometown side Liverpool before playing for Everton and Arsenal.

And now, having put pen to paper in south-east London, the ambitious player has one goal and one goal only – to help fire the Addicks into the FA Women’s Super League.

And, having been part of the Gillingham side that came agonisingly close to winning the FA Women’s Premier League South last season, she has extra motivation.

Whinnett played 11 times for Gillingham, scoring three goals, as they came within two points of the title, losing 3-0 to eventual winners Coventry City in the penultimate game of the season.

She said: “I’m buzzing, pretty ecstatic to be fair. I didn’t expect an opportunity like this. I’m going to grab it with both hands and go for it.

“I’ve been playing for 17 years and not really getting anywhere and now all of a sudden I’ve got big clubs who want me, it’s brilliant! I can’t wait to walk out there with a Charlton shirt on and feel proud of the team that I’m on.

“When [Gillingham] played against you the other week, you all wanted to win that game no matter what. You wanted to be first to the ball and I like that – it’s all about fighting and heart. That’s what you need.

“I want to win the league. It was heart-wrenching to come second with Gills last year because we really thought we’d done it.

“But we’re smashing it so far and I think we can do it, especially when I played against you, there’s some wicked talent here and the management seem alright. Hopefully it will be amazing.”

Nikita is set to go straight into the squad that will down to Plymouth this weekend and will provide more attacking quality for a team that has already scored 38 goals in just 10 league games this campaign.

Despite being a Liverpool supporter, Whinnett uses a current Manchester United and former Everton player to describe her favoured position: “Wayne Rooney, just behind the two strikers.”

She added: “Although I don’t mind going on the wing if I have to because I’m quite quick so tracking back’s not too bad – not that I’m asking management to put me on the wing!

“Most managers test me all the time, play me in positions I’ve never played in – as long as I don’t play in defence I’m happy! I’ll do whatever I need to do for the team – it’s a team effort.

“I’ve got a lot of heart, passion. Sometimes I let things get to me on the pitch and people think I’m angry all the time – it’s not, I just get frustrated. I want to win, I want to work hard, I want to push myself all the time.”
