After the emphatic 3-1 away victory over Gillingham, Charlton Women find themselves five points clear at the top of the table with two home games remaining; Technical Director Paul Mortimer was openly delighted.rn
Report by Colin B Robertson

“At no point did I think we were going to draw or lose that game. I said to the girls at half time the game is there for you to win or lose. Concentrate on you, your individual and collective performances and you can beat these. I said to them it will be three of four. I said your good enough to do that and it should have been fours or fives but I’m happy with three….can I just say, I am smiling!”

Felicity Gibbons was industrious as ever during the game, digging a cross out from the by-line for Kimberly Dixson’s header that put the Addicks ahead in the second half, “How Fliss pulled that one back form there I have no idea! Incidentally, from what I’m hearing there was no way she was offside in the first half; but it swings in roundabouts  they had  a couple where they were not offside too but she’s been brilliant this season.”

“There are two games left and they’re showing that desire and that hunger to kill the game off.  I’m smiling again, I really am - they said to me after the game are you going to smile now. We’ll enjoy it for now, not training tomorrow but its back to the grind stone.”

The Addicks aim for a clean sheet, “We’re disappointed to have conceded. If they had if they had rasped one in the top corner then it would we’d hold our hands up but it wasn’t like that it was down to us, which the girls were a little bit disappointed but for me it’s no problem because I thought it woke us up.”
The goal came off the back of some squeezing and high pressure by the opposition that Mortimer saw as a tactic that his team had to outsmart, “In the end we passed it correctly, the girls had the correct angles and we had more time on the ball than the girls thought sometimes.”

Asked whether he’ll be spending time gazing at the table, he mused, “I don’t do that” pausing, “I’ve never been in this position before so I suppose I will. The other day I spent about half an hour just looking at it, just looking at it and looking. I’ll go home tonight and I’ll be looking at it thinking ‘we are top of the table…’”

He continued, “…and the girls deserve to be there. Luck has got nothing to do with it. The girls have worked so hard for it. They have showed such an improvement since the first quarter of the season – scoring goals and not just Gemma”
“She was brilliant again today, she should have scored three; leading the line. She does it so well and I hope she gets more goals – she has been brilliant. Fliss was brilliant; Jenny was brilliant, they all did so well.”

Goalkeeper Megen Lynch made a vital save in the first half, “Megen had very little to do in the second half which is how I like it. In the first half of the season she was saving us in games and not doing that so much – she did in the first half. The midfield is working well and Fran is playing well – I’m delighted with the team.”

He almost doesn’t want the season to stop but surely kit man, ‘Morty’ likes a holiday? “They are playing so well you just want to keep that going.”
“It doesn’t matter who they come up against, Gritty ones, whether they can play, quick girls they have dealt with all of them in the last seven or eight games and I’m delighted, so happy for them.” “…So far …not over yet.”
