A stunning comeback from Huddersfield Town Ladies saw the Terriers snatch a win on penalties against Charlton in the FA Cup Fourth Round.
The Addicks seemed to be cruising at 3-0 up, with Kit Graham netting a brace and Charlotte Gurr getting on the scoresheet, but a goal in the 74th minute from Brittany Sandersan saw the beginning of a late comeback.
Charlton opened the scoring in the 6th minute, a lovely through ball into Graham saw the striker calmly slot the ball past Laura Carter to make it 1-0.
The Addicks played well for the first period, and made it 2-0 with Gurr heading in. Charlton then got their third in the 67th minute when Graham turned two Huddersfield defenders and fired the ball in.
Huddersfield’s comeback was on the horizon though, and in the 74th minute Sandersan tapped the ball in from a corner.
Just one minute later the visitors made it 3-2, when Laura Elford chipped the ball over Katie Startup to make it a nervy final 15 minutes at The Oakwood.
Charlton couldn’t hold on and Huddersfield made it three thanks to Kate Mallin who poked the ball in after a goalmouth scramble.
The visitors continued to attack, and almost grabbed a late winner in the 87th minute, a cross was whipped into the six-yard box, but Elford’s header was centimetres wide of the post.
The Addicks tried to battle in extra time and in the 95th minute Lily Agg saw Laura Carter off her line and went for goal, but her effort flew wide.
A minute later Charlton had a golden opportunity to get a fourth, Charley Clifford’s free-kick was parried into the path of Harley Bennett who couldn’t get a clean connection with the ball, her header was straight into Carter’s arms.
The second half of extra time saw Huddersfield dominate possession. A scramble in Charlton’s six-yard box in the 116th minute saw Startup bravely come out and claim the ball.
Two late corners in the 120th minute were well defended by Charlton, as the game went to penalties.
Agg fired the first penalty in, with Huddersfield captain equalling her by calmly scoring her spot kick.
Liz Ejupi was up next for the Addicks, but her penalty was well saved by Carter.
Huddersfield went on to convert all of their remaining penalties, taking them into the next round of the FA Cup.
Charlton’s next game is away to Aston Villa on Wednesday 20 February.
The next home game for the Addicks will be played at The Valley against Millwall Lionesses on Wednesday 13th March, 7.45pm.
