The Charlton Athletic Women’s team recorded their third loss of the season on Wednesday night after suffering a 2-0 defeat away to Aston Villa.

It was a fast-paced start to the first half, with good chances for both sides in the first ten minutes. The Addicks almost went 1-0 up in the fifth minute, brilliant link up play between Kit Graham and Charlotte Gurr saw the latter have a powerful strike well saved.

Four minutes later Sara Eggesvik won the ball on the right wing and sent in a driven cross to Graham, whose shot was blocked by one of the Villa defenders.

It was Aston Villa who got the breakthrough though, a powerful run down the wing from Sophie Haywood allowed her to slam the ball into the roof of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Charlton were unable to get into their stride after that goal, making crucial mistakes allowing Villa to persist with their attacking momentum.

The home side should’ve made it 2-0 in the 19th minute, Alice Hassall found herself with space in the box but couldn’t hit the target.

Charlton had few meaningful chances in the first half, and Villa made Charlton rue their mistakes.

Kerri Welsh made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute, a ball was threaded through to her and she made no mistake slotting it into the bottom corner.

Charlotte Kerr made a fantastic interception which denied what would have been a certain tap in for a Villa player in the 43rd minute.

Charlton started the second half well, attacking the hosts straight from kick-off.

Despite the attacking persistence though, no shots really troubled the Aston Villa shot-stopper.

The Addicks fought hard to try and get a goal, bringing on Charley Clifford and former Villa player Liz Ejupi.

Ejupi came closest to scoring for Charlton with eleven minutes left, somehow her low shot was blocked on the line and her rebound effort was cleared.

The Addicks next face Millwall Lionesses at The Valley on Wednesday 13 March, 7.45pm kick-off. Click here to buy tickets
