Now the only team that can stop the Addicks from becoming champions are Cardiff but the Welsh side, who on Sunday inflicted Charlton’s only league defeat in 2011, need to improve their goal difference by 17 goals in just two games.

The result, although, a little nervy at times, delighted the players as well as Technical Director Paul Mortimer, who have all been working towards this moment all season.

Skipper Katie Flack said: “I am absolutely chuffed. The main aim all season was to get promoted and we all dug in and got the result we wanted.

“We put pressure on ourselves tonight. We knew we had to get a result, we had to be patient and when the goal came we sat back, kept possession and killed the game off.”

Coming into 2011 Charlton were sitting in mid table and were only an outside bet for the title, despite the closeness of the league, but a run of seven successive wins and a record of nine wins, one draw and one loss this year has seen an outstanding turn around in fortunes.

Mortimer believes the turning point was an FA Cup victory over Reading, where his side played with 10 players for around 80 minutes, and according to Flack the reason for the incredible end of season form is ‘team cohesion’.

The right back added: “We all knew what we wanted, stuck together and dug out the results that we wanted and needed. We all had one aim, to get promoted, and that is what we have done.”

It was striker Gemma Bryan whose goal won the final game and secured promotion and it seemed the most fitting way to end it for the Addicks.

Bryan has been superb in leading the line this season and is the Southern Division’s top goalscorer with 19 goals from 17 games and she has 25 goals in all competitions and Flack paid tribute to her efforts.

“Gemma has won us the league,” she said. “She holds the ball up well, plays up top on her own, keeps the ball well so we can get up and support her and she finishes brilliantly.”

Meanwhile, Bryan put her success down to the quality of her team mates, adding: “It has been a dream season but I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my team mates.

“They understand how I play and have just stuck at it all year around. We have so much quality in our team and, at the end of the day, once we got one result it all came together because we believed we were good enough to compete.”
