The Charlton women’s team have been drawn at home to Portsmouth Ladies in the second round of the SSE FA Women’s Cup. The tie will take place at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Sunday 8 January
It will be the third time the two sides have clashed at the venue, having been drawn against each other in the FA Women’s Premier League (FAWPL) Cup and also played in the FAWPL South. On both occasions, Charlton came from behind to win 4-2.

Charlton hit back from a goal down to beat local rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday at Selhurst Park to reach this round and were quarter finals two seasons ago, losing on penalties to FA Women’s Super League side Everton.

Pompey, meanwhile, beat FAWPL South-East Division One outfit Luton Town 4-1 to progress.

Charlton first-team manager Paul McDonagh was pleased with his side’s progress in the competition. “It could have been the scrappiest goals ever,” he said, “it wouldn’t matter to me – it’s about getting those goals and getting through to the next round. It means a bit of extra money as well, which is good for the club.

“We’d love to get through a few more rounds and pull out one of the big Super League 1 sides like Man City, Chelsea or Arsenal – that would be amazing. We’ll have to see what happens in the next round first, though.”

Pompey, FAWPL South champions two seasons ago, currently sit in seventh place in the division, 10 points behind the Addicks, who are second. Despite the difference in league position, if previous meetings are anything to go by, this one is set to be a cracker.

We will have more details on ticket prices, etc in due course.
