Sarah Jones hopes the Charlton women’s team can take momentum from their first win of the season against her old club Gillingham into their league campaign.

Jones was named PHSC plc Player of the Match on Sunday as the Addicks defeated the Gills 4-1 in their first Premier League Cup game of the season.

A brace from Gemma Shepherd came either side of an Anelle Massey equaliser while headers from Ellie Stenning and Kit Graham secured the result.

Jones, who joined Charlton from their Kent rivals this summer, said: “I think we had a point to prove after previous weeks [losing to Coventry then drawing 4-4 with Manchester City].

“It’s an important day to get the first three points of the season and a definite boost in confidence going into next weekend.

“We controlled this game and were dominant from start to finish. We have got something here, we just need to get some more points on the board, get a bit more confidence and find a bit of a rhythm.

“Hopefully we can build on that performance and get our league campaign underway [against Aston Villa this Sunday] because the League Cup is great but ultimately we want to be finishing well in the league.”

The former Millwall centre-half admitted she could have done better for the hosts’ sole goal but was pleased to have the win in the bag.

Coming back to your old ground can be a bit surreal at times but Sarah hopes any inside knowledge of Gillingham’s attackers counted in her favour and helped her bag her first Player of the Match award this season.

“I was disappointed to let the goal in,” she added, “I think I could have done better there but nonetheless they had a few threats going forward, a bit of pace, and we dealt with that pretty well generally.

“I was just happy to get the result, happy for the team not from an individual perspective but to win player of the match is good, especially against your old club.

“I was obviously going to come back here at some point so I’m just glad the result went our way. They can be a banana-skin sometimes Gills, they can pull out a good result, a good performance so I’m glad we overcame that hurdle today.

“It gave me a bit of an insight, yeah. Knowing the people’s strengths and weaknesses… it’s probably why I got man of the match, because I had that little advantage!”
