The Charlton women’s team are delighted to announce centre back Grace Coombs’ contract has been extended for the 2017/18 season.
“I know the staff have done a lot of planning for it so it's exciting to see what they have in store for us.
The homegrown defender’s new deal comes shortly after centre half partner and Player of the Year Rosey Sullivan also committed for an extra year, along with right back Ruby Southgate, giving first team coach Riteesh Mishra a defensive boost ahead of the new campaign.
Coombs, who has made 182 appearances since joining the club’s Centre of Excellence at a young age and either side of a three-year spell at the University of Massacheusetts, said signing up was an “easy decision” and is raring to get on with the job in hand.
“I'm really looking forward to [next season],” she said. “I know the staff have done a lot of planning for it so it's exciting to see what they have in store for us.
“It's really important to get off to strong start in the league so we need to make sure we build momentum throughout pre-season and take the positives from the end of last season in to this campaign.”
Reflecting on what was ultimately a “disappointing” outcome last term, the 26-year-old is keen to improve on Charlton’s 4th placed finish.
An improvement in performances during the second half of the season, driven by a more composed and settled defensive unit anchored by both Coombs and Sullivan alongside Southgate and Katie Flack, gives the side confidence in their ability to challenge for the title in what is set to be the tightest FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division for a few years.
“Last season was a very hard season for all of us with a lot of change throughout the whole year. I think we deserved the cup win at the end, but we were disappointed to not win more,” Coombs added.
“The second half of the season was much improved and from that, we have a lot of positives to build on for next season. The main goal for the team is win the league, that's going to be the priority. But also to get as far as we can in every cup competition and hopefully win some more silverware.
“Personally, I hope I can build on my performances from the end of last season, keep improving and hopefully chip in with a few goals too!”
