Winger Fliss Gibbons has capped off a superb rookie year in the Charlton Women’s senior team with a call up for an England under 19 talent camp, with fellow midfielder Ellie Bailes on standby for the squad.

Report by David Brenchley

Gibbons, 16, has been one of the stand-out performers for the Addicks this campaign, having made her debut as a substitute in the League Cup against Brighton earlier in the year.

Having been informed of the news whilst at school, Fliss is looking forward to the camp, saying: “I am really excited. I am nervous but looking forward to it, I think it will be a really good experience.

“I am honoured to know that they have chosen me for the camp. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I think it is a big honour representing Charlton so to be training with my country is a really big thing for me.

“I just want to show them what I can do, make the most of it, perform the best I can and learn a lot of new stuff, which I am sure I will.

“The coaches are going to be top class and I am going to be playing with some really good girls and, as much as I have improved over the season, I want to keep improving and this is just going to make me a better player.”

Gibbons is the second Charlton player to have earnt their first under 19 call up this season; Charley Clifford has played and scored for them as well and the Maidstone-born winger has revealed she has gained advice from Clifford.

“I have told Charley [about the call up] and she has given me loads of advice and that has helped to calm my nerves because I have no idea what to expect,” she added.

“She said she knows a few of the girls and that I will really enjoy it. I am nervous but talking to her and knowing she has been through the same thing and she has done really well has really helped me.”

Having stepped up from the centre of excellence at the start of the season, Gibbons has made 26 appearances in all competitions for the first team, scoring nine goals and assisting four.

She admitted it has been a better season that she could ever have imagined. “I have absolutely loved it,” she said, “I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it as much as I have.

“I never thought I would have played as much as I have at such a high standard and getting promotion was fantastic. I loved the centre of excellence but this has been one of my favourite seasons of football.”

The England U19 Talent Training Camp takes place at Warwick University from 12th-16th May. Everyone at Charlton would like to wish Fliss the best of luck & Ellie too if she gets called up.
