Charlton Athletic Women are delighted to announce the signing of former Bristol City forward Ella Rutherford for the 2020/21 season.

Rutherford, 20, returns to south east London having left FA Women’s Super League side Bristol City over the summer. Rutherford made 19 appearances for Bristol in the FAWSL, scoring two goals.

The striker spent the 2019/20 season on loan in the FA Women’s Championship, first for Crystal Palace, where she scored twice in eight games, then Leicester City, where she netted once in two matches.

Rutherford told the club’s website she was “really excited” to have signed and had “enjoyed training here during pre-season”.

“This club has great ambition. I wanted to come here, work hard and get the club where it should be, because there is a great group of girls here and I feel like we can really do something this season,” she said.

Rutherford will be available for the visit to The Oakwood of her former club Crystal Palace on Saturday. “It has been a long time out. We are all ready, preparation has been good and we can’t wait to get out on the pitch now.”

Rutherford began her career with Millwall Lionesses, scoring seven times in 14 games and winning the FAWSL 2’s Breakout Star award for the 2017/18 season.

Rutherford has represented England at under 15, under 16, under 17 and under 19 level.
