Just a week after returning from England under 19 duty, Charlton midfielder Charley Clifford has been called up to the squad for the UEFA European Women’s under 19 Championship 2nd qualifying round.

Report by David Brenchley

Charley will travel to Croatia on Monday 28th March as England face Portugal, Norway and the home nation in a bid to qualify for the final tournament held in Italy in June.

Mo Marley’s side won the competition back in 2009 and were defeated finalists last year so will be hoping to qualify this year as well.

Clifford was part of the England squad that finished top of the Ten Nations Tournament in La Manga last week, bagging her first ever international goal in the process.

The strike came in the 72nd minute of the young Lionesses’ final game against Sweden, which they won 3-0, and Clifford said: “Being in La Manga, it is everyone’s dream just to go there so it was brilliant.

“The complex, the pitches and everything was so nice – weather wasn’t all that though! It was fine for the first few days but then we had thunder and lightening and it got quite chilly.”

Clifford’s first goal for her country came inbetween strikes from Arsenal’s Jordan Nobbs and Everton striker Nikita Parris and she admitted it still has not sunk in yet, adding: “I was shocked more than anything.

“When I turned around everyone just ran and jumped on me and I didn’t know what to do. It didn’t really hit me [then] and I still don’t think is has.”

England’s first game is on March 31 against hosts Croatia in Novigrad before the travel to Umag to face the Portuguese on April 2 and then back to Novigrad to finish up against Norway on April 5.
