The Charlton women’s team eased into the third round of the SSE FA Women’s Cup with a 9-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Sunday.
Hat tricks from Kit Graham and Gemma Shepherd were supplemented by goals from Stef Simmons, Kim Dixson and Jenny Newman to put the Addicks into the hat for the draw, which takes place on Monday.
The victory keeps up a dominance Charlton have over Argyle: their previous matches over this season and last read 7-1, 5-3, 11-1, 6-1 – a first clean sheet was also welcome.
Manager Jeremy Parsons made five changes from the team that lost 2-0 to Brighton last time out, which was a whole five weeks ago, with Megen Lynch restored in goal.
Simmons, Shepherd, Ellie Baxter and Ruby Southgate also came in, with Grace Coombs, Nikita Whinnett and Jenny Newman dropping to the bench and Charley Clifford injured.
Despite a chilly wind and soggy pitch, kick off was met with bright sunlight as Charlton tried to stamp their authority on the game from the start. They did, but saw Shepherd’s third-minute header disallowed for offside, after a lengthy discussion between referee and assistant.
Simmons had a driven shot from a corner cleared off the line early on, but it took 18 minutes for the Addicks to break the deadlock despite their dominance.
A quick throw from Baxter, who impressed in a new central midfield position, found its way to Shepherd, who turned her defender on the right-hand edge of the area and cut back to Graham to stroke home.
Shepherd tried her best to get herself onto the scoresheet, shooting straight at keeper Rebecca Kyle after a marauding run through the heart of the Plymouth defence before setting up Sam Pittuck to curl an effort wide of the far post from a difficult angle.
It was 2-0 shortly after the half an hour mark when Kyle parried a Shepherd strike into the middle of the penalty area, where Graham was following up for her second of the contest.
Pittuck headed an Amy Howlett cross over moments later from a couple of yards out, while Graham had prematurely celebrated a treble as her goal, having rounded Kyle, was flagged offside.
With three minutes until the interval, Baxter slid a ball behind the Argyle defence for Shepherd, who made no mistake with a one-on-one chance to make it 3-0, a lead the hosts would hold into the break.
The visitors did have one chance on the stroke of half time but Jodie Chubb’s sidefooted volley flashed wide of the target.
Kyle had to be on her best form to deny Shepherd seconds into the second period, diving to her right to push a shot wide – although both referee and assistant missed the touch and gave a goal kick.
It mattered little, though, as the fourth goal wasn’t long in coming – just five minutes into the half as Shepherd stood a cross up to the back post and Graham volleyed home for her hat trick.
Eight minutes later, the pick of the bunch made it 5-0 as Simmons curled a peach of a free kick from 18 yards out into the bottom far corner, with Kyle getting a hand to it but failing to keep it out.
On 68 minutes captain Kim Dixson slammed home a sixth after Shepherd combined with sub Whinnett and the former had crossed for her skipper.
With 16 minutes of the tie remaining, Shepherd tried to rival Simmons for goal of the match, from a free kick around 25 yards out. Dixson’s dummy run made the Plymouth wall flinch and Shepherd fired a pinpoint drive into the corner.
The final two goals came in the final two minutes, with Newman running onto a through ball and squaring for Shepherd to complete her hat trick and, a minute later, Shepherd returned the favour by setting Newman up to get herself on the scoresheet.
Charlton: Lynch; Southgate, Flack, Pittuck, Paye (Coombs 69); Baxter, Dixson, Howlett, Simmons (Whinnett 59); Graham (Newman 69), Shepherd.
