The Charlton women’s team claimed an emphatic 8-1 victory against Gillingham at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Wednesday evening to open a 5 point gap at the top of the league
Georgia Griffin netted her first FAWPL hat-trick, with Dixson, Graham, Gurr and Clifford also getting on the score-sheet.
The Addicks dominated the game right from the off, with neat passing from the defence to the attack.
It took fifteen minutes before the first real chance though, as Hope Nash sent in an inviting cross that was just too high for anyone to get their heads to.
The first goal came on the half hour mark as a Gillingham goal kick was well intercepted, Dixson reacted quickly to slot home to make it 1-0 to Charlton.
Just three minutes later Charlton almost doubled their lead, as Nash slipped the ball to Lee in the box who blasted over.
Two minutes before half time the Addicks made it 2-0 as a superb long ball from Brunton-Wilde found Griffin in the box after a slight deflection. The Charlton forward did well to compose herself and score.
On the brink of half time, Charlton got their third after some good pressing from the midfield. The ball was threaded through to Griffin who cooly slotted past the Gillingham keeper to get her second of the game.
One minute after the restart Charlton were straight on the attack as Clifford’s powerful long range strike rattled the crossbar.
On the 54th minute Georgia Griffin completed her hat trick, as Nash’s effort at goal was deflected into the path of Griffin who poked the ball in for Charlton’s fourth of the game.
In a rare attack Gillingham won a free kick in a promising position on the 69th minute, but Startup had her angles covered well as the ball flew over her goal.
With twenty minutes to go, Graham got her first of the game as she twisted and turned in the Gillingham box to see her powerful shot fly into the net to make it 5-0 to the Addicks.
Two minutes later Charlton were awarded a penalty as Graham was hacked down in the area, Graham slammed in the spot-kick to make it 6-0.
Gillingham pulled one back with fifteen minutes to go, with a superb 30-yard strike from Jade Keogh that flew past Startup.
However, on the 77th minute Charlton made it 7-1, as Graham linked well with Gurr whose effort found the corner of the net.
With nine minutes left of the game the Addicks completed their 8-1 victory with a thunderous 25-yard strike from Clifford, which slammed into the Gillingham net.
The Addicks face Chichester on Sunday at Sporting Club Thamesmead, and will play Blackburn Rovers in the FAWPL Championship Play Off Final on Sunday 27 May at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.
