The Charlton women’s Development team kicked off 2018 with an emphatic 6-0 victory against a spirited Denham United side in the FA Women’s Premier League (FAWPL) Reserve Southern Division at Sparrows Lane on Sunday.
Manager Luke Brown was pleased with his side’s performance, saying: “I thought the build up to every goal was superb, very good finishes and it was good to keep a clean sheet.”
 
It took the Addicks most of the first half to really get into their stride, before three goals in rapid succession left Denham reeling at the half-time whistle.
 
“I thought the first 38 minutes were pretty sloppy. For the first 10 minutes Denham came at us, I thought we rode that out quite well and after that there was only going to be one winner,” Brown said.
 
Beth Weller opened the scoring for Charlton on the 38th minute following good midfield play. Weller ran through the defence and slotted home to give Charlton the lead.
 
Three minutes later Emma Sherwood scored from the spot after she had been brought down in the area. Shortly after, Denham lost possession in midfield, allowing Charlton to quickly slice through the defence for Sherwood to get her second goal of the game.
 
Charlton dominated the second half proceedings, with Weller doubling her tally on the hour.

Ella Bailey got on the scoresheet late on before Amy Nash scored the goal of the game with a superb chip from just outside the box to round off a great afternoon for the home side.
 
Charlton could have scored more but were guilty of missing some chances, and were also kept at bay by an outstanding performance from Denham keeper Katie Chaw.
 
Nash said: “I thought we played well and kept the ball well, but we could’ve taken more chances.”
 
Weller added that the team are keen to take this momentum into their next game against AFC Wimbledon on Sunday.
