Braces from Sam Pittuck and Jenny Newman saw the Charlton women’s team overcome Keynsham Town at the AJN Stadium on Sunday.
The Addicks travelled to the West Country in high spirits after an 11-0 friendly win over Barnet Development and manager Stuart Weston gave league debuts to right back Ruby Southgate and forward Olivia Cole after both impressed last weekend.

The hosts were without a league win this season and came flying out of the blocks, intent on grabbing the opening goal, but they were blunt in front of goal.

After both sides had traded timid efforts, Charlton had the first real chance when Rosie Paye set Pittuck free but her long-range shot flew narrowly over.

The striker did not have to wait long to break the deadlock, though, as a minute later Charlton had scored their maiden first-half goal of the season.

With 28 minutes on the clock, Kit Graham threaded a superb ball through the defence to PHSC plc Player of the Match Pittuck, who had timed her run perfectly (as she did many times on the day).

Keynsham’s Brazilian youth international goalkeeper came charging out of her area but Pittuck got her foot to the ball first and chipped over her and into an unguarded net.

Graham found herself with the ball shortly after and, taking a couple of touches to make room for herself, drove the ball just over.

With five minutes of the first half remaining, a long Megen Lynch goal kick found its way past the Keynsham defence, where Pittuck had once again beaten the offside trap but her shot hit the post.

After chasing the rebound, she pulled the ball back for Graham but keeper Nascimento made a smart stop at the near post.

A minute later Pittuck doubled the south-east Londoners’ advantage. The centre back dallied on the ball a second too long and the striker robbed her of possession and coolly slotted past Nascimento.

On the stroke of half time, Keynsham almost dragged themselves back into it when Julissa Rodriguez lobbed Lynch but Katie Flack did brilliantly to clear off the line.

Another good chance went begging for the home side just subsequent to the interval when a cross found Rodriguez at the far post but Lynch stood up and made a good save with her legs.

On 52 minutes Pittuck turned provider, drifting out wide and beating the full back before whipping in a low cross to the near post where Newman was on hand to beat the keeper and flick home.

Substitute Kristina Manktelow was the second Charlton player to hit the post on the hour mark, with Pittuck bundling the ball over the line seconds later only to see the goal chalked off for offside.

On 71 minutes, Newman had her second of the day, firing home from 25 yards, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

The final real opportunity of the match came from a Keynsham free kick, which was taken quickly while the referee was pacing out the Addicks’ wall’s 10 yards.

Aimee Clark fired the set piece on target but Lynch was alert and got down to push the ball round the post for a corner.

Charlton: Lynch, Southgate, Simmons (Kristina Manktelow 54), Paye, Flack, Dixson, Tye (Clifford 61), Graham, Newman, Cole (Bennett 61), Pittuck. Subs (not used): Firkins, Kylie Manktelow.
