Gemma Shepherd continued her fine pre-season goalscoring form, hitting a hat trick to fire the Charlton women’s team to a 4-0 win over Enfield Town on Sunday.
In a game hit by variable weather, including a 15 minute thunderstorm split by glorious sunshine, Shepherd got her side off to the perfect start, scoring just three minutes in.
The score stayed that way until half time, with former Addicks goalkeeper Kelly Cooper pulling off a string of top saves to deny her old club a comfortable cushion at the interval.
Charlton’s advantage was doubled, though shortly after the break when Shepherd lobbed Cooper and completed her hat trick later on in the game, taking her haul to nine goals in just four friendly matches.
The scoring was finished off late on when a trialist slammed home a fine effort from the edge of the area shortly before full time.
But it was Shepherd who stole the show, taking advantage of her side’s speed out of the blocks. A throw in by captain Katie Flack found its way to Sam Pittuck, who held off her defender and squared into the box, where Shepherd was waiting to beat Cooper to the ball and stroke home.
Shepherd turned creator later, flicking side for Pittuck to fire goalwards but Cooper flew to her right to tip a shot that looked destined for the top corner over the bar.
Shepherd went close moments later when she cut in from the left but saw her effort curl just ide of the post.
Shepherd, who is returning from an 11-month lay off through injury, had her second just two minutes into the second period. She latched onto an incisive Emma Harrison through ball and chipped over the onrushing Cooper, who got a hand to it but not enough to keep it out.
Shepherd’s hat trick came with 20 minutes remaining, converting a one-on-one chance with Enfield’s reserve stopper and putting the game beyond reach.
Enfield’s best chance came 10 minutes later when Megen Lynch had to be alert to tip a close range shot over the bar in order to preserve her clean sheet.
