The Charlton women’s team are through to the Capital Women`s Senior Cup Final after a tough 3-2 win against Leyton Orient women on Sunday afternoon.
The Addicks will face local rivals Crystal Palace Ladies in the final.
In a hard-fought game it was Charlton who took the lead through Georgia Griffin. The young striker rounded the keeper and slotted home on the 13th minute after an inch perfect through-ball by Kit Graham.
Charlton enjoyed most of the possession in the opening 20 minutes with some neat passing moves, and almost made it 2-0 five minutes later as Graham got on the end of Kerry Walklett’s driven cross. However the ball was tipped just over the bar by Orient shot-stopper Naomi Ogunde.
A calamitous mix up in midfield led to a Leyton Orient counter attack, which saw Belen Ripoll-Donton tap in a Hayley Barton cross to equalise against the run of play on the 22nd minute.
Leyton Orient’s goal gave the underdogs, who play one division below their hosts in the FA Women’s Premier League South East, a boost, while Charlton’s play became sloppy at times.
The latter part of the first half drifted to a close as neither side created many meaningful chances, though, on the stroke of half time, Graham shot narrowly wide of the Orient goal.
Charlton’s sloppiness on the ball continued at the start of the second half as Walklett gave away possession in the Addicks’ half. That led to Katie Holmeback striking from 30 yards out over the head of Startup and into the Charlton net to give the away side the lead on the 46th minute.
That goal woke Charlton up and the Addicks started to play neat football again, passing well and pressing up the pitch.
Charlton’s persistence paid off in the 62nd minute when an excellent turn by Graham left two Orient defenders rooted to the spot as her strike from the edge of the box went in just under the bar to make the score level again.
Just three minutes later Graham’s skill got her past the Orient defence once again but nobody was able to latch on to her driven cross.
The Addicks began to pile on the pressure and on the 69th minute a fantastic save from Ogunde kept the score level.
The difference in leagues began to show as the second half went on with the Addicks applying permanent pressure.
With 18 minutes to go Charlton scored what turned out to be the winner as Graham superbly volleyed home an inch perfect ball from Charley Clifford.
Orient battled to try and equalise again but made little headway until the 87th minute when Startup had to act swiftly to gather a loose ball which Orient were threatening to latch on to.
