The Charlton women’s team squeezed past bottom of the table Chesham United 3-2 at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Sunday.
The Addicks took an early two-goal lead through Jenny Newman and Kim Dixson, who later went off through injury, leaving her side down to 10 players.

Vicky Gallagher pulled one goal back for the visitors before the break but Sam Pittuck extended Charlton’s lead five minutes into the second period.

With Dixson on the sidelines after a knock on her knee, Nat Adams made it a nervous final eight minutes but the hosts managed to hold on to move into third place in the FA Women’s Premier League.

The north London side started quickly, with Megen Lynch thwarting one attack before Pittuck forced the opposition keeper into an easy early save and Newman shot narrowly wide from an Olivia Cole assist.

Midfielder Fran Tye then forced the ball goalwards inside the six-yard box from a Dixson corner but it was cleared off the line by a defender.

Watford loanee Chloe Gunn the robbed Tye of possession in a dangerous place but shot wildly over.

Charlton broke the deadlock after 18 minutes, with some great interplay on the right setting Pittuck free. The striker swung a low cross to the back post where Newman turned home.

Just five minutes later their advantage was doubled; Newman lobbed goalkeeper McGloin from 20 yards out but a defender managed to clear off the line for a corner.

Captain Dixson’s resulting flag kick flew over McGloin, who got a hand to it, and directly into the far corner.

Tye and Pittuck were both unlucky not to make it three when shooting across the face of goal and the Addicks were pegged back just after. A throw in the final third found its way across the penalty area to Gallagher, who made no mistake from close range.

Five minutes after the interval, Charlton’s two-goal advantage was restores as right back Ruby Southgate played a searching through ball and, after a mix up between defender and goalkeeper, Pittuck was left with an open goal in which to score.

It was back-to-the-wall stuff from around the 75th minute, after Dixson picked up a knock and, with all their substitutes used up, the Addicks had to play with just ten players.

First a Gemma Fraser cross was headed just past her own goal by Rosie Paye, then Kate Bowers shot narrowly wide from long range.

With eight minutes remaining in the tie, Adams beat Lynch to the ball at the edge of the area and lobbed the keeper to make it 3-2.

Lynch made amends later, doing brilliantly to tip over from a very long-range effort. Fraser curled a couple of chances wide late on but Charlton held out for their second victory in a row.

Charlton: Lynch, Southgate, Simmons, Flack (Butler 15), Paye, Dixson, Tye, Cole, Graham, Newman, Pittuck (Bennett 61).
