Three stunning strikes helped the Charlton women’s team march into the FA Women’s Cup third round after a 3-0 victory over Milton Keynes Dons at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Sunday.
After a tight, goalless first half, midfielder Charley Clifford struck twice within the first 10 minutes of the second period to give the Addicks control of the game.

Kit Graham then had the last say with almost the final kick of the game, to set up a match with either Sheffield FC or Liverpool Feds at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Sunday 9 February.

After not having a competitive game for a full month, Charlton were very much getting back up to speed in a first half that was, in the main, played in a congested centre of the pitch.

It was still a dominant performance from the hosts, with goalkeeper and stand-in captain Megen Lynch having just a couple of shots to save throughout.

The first of those came early on when Charley Wright’s free kick was blocked by PHSC plc Player of the Match Emma Harrison and Lynch got down well to tip Heather McDonnell’s drive round the post.

Shortly after right back Leigh Houlihan’s excellent through ball found Kit Graham who turned her defender but her shot was deflected wide.

The only other two chances of note came from free kicks but both Clifford and Stef Simmons saw their set pieces fly over the crossbar.

After not making the MK Dons keeper work in the first 45, it was clear the Addicks wanted to put that right after the interval and, with the first two shots of the half they had a two-goal lead.

The first came out of nothing, when Clifford picked up the ball around 35 yards out and, with the keeper well off her line unleashed a bullet that flew into the top corner.

Five minutes later she doubled her and Charlton’s tally for the day after an MK Dons defender was penalised for handball 20 yards out. Clifford stepped up and put the free kick perfectly into the same corner.

Despite their dominance of possession and territory, there were few clear-cut chances for the home side. Dons defender Kara Howes narrowly headed a Simmons corner over her own crossbar and Graham nodded a Clifford free kick straight at keeper Emma Kirby.

Clifford almost made it a hat trick of screamers late on when her 25-yard shot flew just wide of the far post but it was Graham who finished the game just seconds before full time with another long-range strike.

Charlton: Lynch, Houlihan, Hardaker (Singyard 59), Paye, Flack, Clifford, Rogers (Hyland 71), Graham, Harrison, Simmons (Ibrahim 69), Pittuck. Subs (not used): Baker, Carroll.
