A 22 minute Amy Howlett hat-trick saw the Charlton women’s team cruise to a 3-0 win over Denham United to advance into the FA Women’s Premier League Cup first round proper on Sunday.
Manager Stuart Weston took the opportunity to make changes to his starting line up, with Sam Pittuck injured and Kit Graham unavailable. Francesca Tye, Clare Rogers and Rosie Paye were brought in for their first starts of the season, with Alice Singyard reinstated to the first eleven.
And the Addicks made the perfect start, Howlett slotting home after an inch-perfect throughball from Gemma Shepherd after just four minutes. Two quick goals in four minutes shortly after that saw Howlett bag her first treble for her new club, one a stunning 30-yard volley.
FAWPL South East Division One side Denham did have the chance to open the scoring themselves, but Natasha Stephens could only shoot straight at Megen Lynch after dispossessing Tye.
But the visitors kept up their goalscoring streak, having netted in all of their previous four competitive matches this season. Shepherd linked up with Rogers in midfield before releasing Howlett with an incisive pass. The former Ipswich Town winger rounded goalkeeper Lizzie Rose to break the deadlock.
Captain Katie Flack went close with an early shot after getting forward from her right-back position but Howlett doubled the visitors’ advantage on 18 minutes.
Shepherd was yet again in the thick of the action, curling an effort onto the crossbar from the edge of the area. From the rebound, a Denham defender dallied on the ball, allowing Howlett to dispossess and stroke into the bottom corner.
Just four minutes later, Howlett had her third, picking the ball up 30 yards out and lashing home over Rose and into the top of the net.
Although that was the end of the scoring, Charlton kept up their pressure until the final whistle and could have had more, with Rogers seeing a shot blocked just before half time from an Emma Harrison cross.
The away side rattled the woodwork for the second time on the hour mark through substitute Katie Hardaker, making her first appearance of the season. With her first touch she got the ball out of her feet and fired a powerful shot over the well-beaten keeper but was unfortunate to see it cannon off the underside of the crossbar.
Harrison saw a flick trickle just wide towards the end, as the south-east Londoners upped the pressure as the clock ticked to 90 minutes.
Howlett whipped in a wicked cross with few targets to aim for but Denham’s captain Joanne Torr headed it against her own bar and Rose did well to tip over Shepherd’s looping header from the follow up.
An excellent ball out of defence from centre back Grace Coombs then found PHSC plc Player of the Match Howlett through on goal but Rose came out decisively and saved.
Charlton could not find a further way through the Denham defence but wrapped up the win and will find out who they face in the round of 32 on Monday at midday.
Charlton: Lynch, Flack (Southgate 58), Singyard (Simmons 43), Paye, Coombs, Clifford, Tye (Hardaker 58), Rogers, Howlett, Harrison, Shepherd.
