The Addicks beat Coventry is an exciting first ever U17 Elite Female Development Programme Showcase Match sponsored by PHSC plc on Saturday at Harlow Town FC
On a bright sunny afternoon on a superb Harlow Town FC playing surface the Addicks started strongly with a shot on the turn from Courteney Gibson narrowly drifting past the post.
Gibson then won a corner and from Megan Mulhollands flag kick Kylie Manktelow saw her goalbound overhead kick cleared by the Coventry defence.
With 17 minutes gone Gibson opened the scoring with an exquisite 25 yard strike fitting for a Showcase Match that dipped just under the crossbar.
Megan Mansfield`s electric pace down the right flank was a constant threat and Coventry keeper Mollie Reeve did well to save one of her dangerous crosses at the second attempt.
Reeve was soon in the action again making a good save from Megan Mulholland`s shot from the edge of the area.
Mulholland then fired another effort wide before setting up Gemma Hyland who saw her effort fly wide.
Keeper Reeve then got her hands to a Manktelow effort before Charlotte Long sent Gibson clear only for the striker to fire wide.
A powerful 25 yard strike from PHSC plc Charlton Player of the Match Jade Keogh was then tipped over the bar by keeper Reeve.
On 31 minutes Mansfield`s corner was volleyed home from 6 yards by centre-back Chloe Shields for her first ever Addicks goal.
Neat footwork from striker Keogh gave her room to shoot from the edge of the area only for the ball to cannon off the top corner of the goal.
Keogh then managed to toe-poke the ball past Reeve but a Coventry defender made a great goal-line clearance.
Coventry then won a free-kick and a great strike from their No.8 brought a superb finger tip save from Addicks keeper Courtney Shanly.
The final action of the half saw Charlotte Wakefield fired a long distance effort wide of the target.
The Addicks continued to dominate after the break and both Long & Keogh blasted efforts wide.
On the hour mark Keogh sent over a cross from the left flank which Manktelow controlled with her first touch before firing a peach of a shot into the bottom corner of the goal from the edge of the area for Charltons third goal.
More skilful footwork from Keogh saw the striker send an effort dipping over the bar before forcing Reeve into another fine save.
Coventry continued to compete well, driven on by their influential skipper & Coventry PHSC plc player of the match Stav Williams.
Pressure from the sky blues forced the Addicks into a defensive mistake but keeper Shanly was alert to the danger making an excellent save with her feet to maintain a clean sheet.
Charlton centre-back Rosie Paye then came within inches of scoring when she hit the under side of the crossbar with a superb free-kick which the Coventry defence scambled clear.
Coventry pressed hard for a late consolation goal and Addicks substitute keeper Helena Scullion confidently saved a long range effort.
In injury time Coventry won a corner which saw keeper Reeve race up to join the action. Charlton cleared the ball and broke clear only for Reeve to race back and make a fine last ditch tackle and clear the ball to safety.
This match completes an outstanding season for the Addicks U17 squad who have won 14, drawn 3 and only lost 1 of their 18 matches.
