Sunday saw Charlton back in action in the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Reserves Division in a windy affair at Portsmouth.
The guests made a bright start to the game with good possession and lovely one touch passing in windy conditions. Which should have been rewarded with a goal when a great cross by Leigh Houlihan was headed wide by Sharna Giordani in the 7th minute.

Another piece of good build up play from the reds saw the ever dangerous Sharna Giordani shot saved comfortably by the Portsmouth custodian in the 12th minute.

Two minutes later, Charlton were finally rewarded for their positive attacking play when Sharna Giordani played a through ball in the air to an alert Kylie Mantelow who smashed a header against the bar, and Olivia Cole with great following up taps the ball in to make it 1-0.

The game started to become scrappier with key battles in an overcrowded midfield after the deadlock was broke. This allowed the hosts Portsmouth to get in dangerous positions but never really threatened. In the 18th minute a free kick for Portsmouth was awarded 25 yards out from the Charlton goal but keeper Alex Baker was more than happy to watch the ball go wide.

As the first half wore on, there were chances few and far between, with central midfielders Daisy Monaghan, Clare Rogers, and Charlotte Barnett being kept busy. In the 34th minute, Charlton were back to playing neat football on the far left hand side of the pitch, when the ball come out to Daisy Monaghan from 25 yards, who let rip an absolute thunderbolt of a strike. But the Portsmouth goalkeeper thwarted Daisy strike with an acrobatic save.

It only took 45 seconds at the start of the second half for Charlton to create a goal scoring opportunity. Good work from Kylie Manktelow saw her shot well saved by the opposition goalkeeper.

In the 50th minute the hosts had a chance to equalise from the corner but Alex Baker saved comfortably from a strike at the edge of the area.

Charlton needed that second goal to kill the game off. It came in the 52 minute. With the wind on our side a long ball from Alex Baker saw Daisy Monaghan break through the Portsmouth defence then taking the ball past the goalkeeper and slotted calmly into an empty net, 2-0.

2-0 up and Charlton are well in control. Clare Rogers fires wide from a free kick in the 53rd minute. In the 75th minute great individual effort from Kylie Mantelow but her strike just goes wide.

There was controversy in the 81st minute when great work from substitute from Tori Campbell saw her shot evade the Portsmouth goalkeeper and from the sidelines looked to have crossed the line but the goalkeeper pushes the ball away and the referee carried on with play.

In the 86th minute, Portsmouth scored the goal of the game. The Portsmouth player received the ball just outside the Charlton penalty area and hit a wonderful ball into the far top corner leaving Alex Baker with no chance.

There was a nervy last 5 minutes but Charlton hanged on to claim the win. This win against Portsmouth saw Charlton go two points clear at the top of the division.

Stand in manager Luke Brown had this to say “Even though we made hard work of it, I am pleased with the performance. It’s fantastic to get back to winning ways.”

Baker, Nash, Richards, Russell, Houlihan, Giordani (Topcu 67), Barnett, Rogers, Monaghan, Cole (Campbell 55), Manktelow
