Nineteen days into the New Year Charlton Development team finally kicked off their campaign away to Castle Colts.
Bolstered by winter recruits the Addicks took to the field with 3 debutants Lauren Gurney, Ellie Richards and Jaime Welch.

It was a jittery start to the game with both teams failing to establish an early rhythm but it was Charlton that created the best chances with Sophie Blowers testing the keeper from range and Beth Rodger failing to convert from close range.

The breakthrough came on the 35th minute after a clever chipped pass from full- back Evie Rose was deftly control by Richards on the chest before smashing the ball on the turn into the top right corner leaving the Castle Colts stopper with no chance.

Looking to increase their lead The Reds pushing for another when left frustrated by a well organised back line who caught strikers Rodger and Alejandra Garzon with the offside trap on numerous occasions.

The second half resumed with the introduction of fourth debutant Ellie-Mae Brown-Araque taking up the position of right midfield. Charlton looking to beat the offside trap began bombarding Colts box with crosses coming thick and fast from both Gurney and Brown-Araque. This change in approach was rewarded when an early cross from deep by Brown-Araque was met by Captain Rodger who expertly timed her run to get across the last defender slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.

On the 55th minute saw a double substitute with Amy toon returning from injury and Annie Morrison replacing midfield duo Blowers and Richards. Much of the second half was played in the opposition half and Tyra Poole found herself missing from close range which proved to be the best chance of the game as Charlton claimed their first three points of the year.

Manager Warren Clarke had this to say " There were a lot of positives to take from today`s game despite starting slowly. Four debutants, players returning from injury and playing in different positions helps with our development and takes us nicely into our next game"

Team: Firkins, Hinds, Welch, Feasey, Rose, Gurney, Richards, Blowers, Poole, Rodger, Garzon Subs: Morrison, Toon, Brown-Araque
