Hat tricks from Kit Graham and Gemma Shepherd fired the Charlton women’s team to a 10-1 victory over Millwall Lionesses in their final friendly on Sunday.
Further goals from Sinead Boyer (2), Stef Simmons and Cherrelle Albert rounded off the Addicks’ pre-season campaign at Sparrows Lane ahead of the new season, which starts in a week against Coventry City.
The hosts started strongly, with Kim Dixson and Charley Clifford both testing a shaky looking Millwall goalkeeper from long range.
The Lionesses also had a brilliant start but former Addick Ciara Sherwood’s effort was easy for Kelly Cooper to gather and Emma Whitter’s cheeky chip rebounded off the far post.
After the latter attempt though Charlton went straight down the other end and opened the soring; a Simmons cross from the left was spilled by the keeper and Shepherd pounced to break the deadlock.
Cooper then made an excellent reflex save from a Dionne Lennon header and Whitter went close again before Charlton seized back the initiative.
Graham and Dixson forced the Millwall keeper into a couple more saves while Albert was set up after good interplay but could only shoot at the keeper.
Shepherd went close again after a one-two with Dixson but the keeper did very well to push her shot round the post for a corner.
From the resulting set piece, again taken by Simmons, the ball found its way to Graham who shot low into the corner of the net.
With five minutes of the first half remaining Gemma Bryan was fouled on the edge of the area and Simmons stepped up to curl the free kick into the far corner.
Before the first period was out Graham and Albert both hit the post but it was Millwall who grabbed the next goal straight from the second half restart - Josie Elliott scoring with a looping effort.
Centre back Sarah Jones nearly extended the Addicks’ lead against her former club but her header was cleared off the line.
It wasn’t long before it was 4-1 though when Shepherd went on a probing run and laid the ball out wide for Albert to cut in and fire across the keeper and in.
Another looping effort, this time from Boyer, made it five and Simmons’ corner, her third assist of the game, found its way to Graham who poked home for six.
With 15 minutes left a clever chipped pass from Emma Sherwood let Shepherd in to lob the keeper and Graham bagged her third with a shot across the goal.
Shepherd then forced the keeper into another good save and Annabel Prior, Sherwood and Jade Keogh all went close late on before a defensive mistake allowed Shepherd the chance to grab her hat trick.
Simmons whipped another corner in and Boyer headed in her second of the game to take Charlton into double figures and finish off the rout.
Charlton: Cooper, Boyer, Simmons, Jones, Chandler, Dixson, Clifford, Shepherd, Graham, Albert, Bryan. Subs: Bennett, Prior, Sherwood & Keogh.
The Reserve team were also in fine goalscoring form netting nine with no reply against Tottenham Reserves. Centre-forward Claire Williams lead the way with five goals whilst Toni Alden and Emma Sherwood bagged braces. 16 year old centre-back Rosie Paye made her senior debut.
