The Charlton women’s team rounded their pre-season campaign off with an emphatic 10-1 victory over Maidstone United at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Sunday.
Four goals from Kit Graham and a second successive Gemma Shepherd hat-trick were supplemented by strikes from Sam Pittuck, Kylie Manktelow and a trialist.
A good early chance was wasted at the back post early on for Charlton but they had to wait just nine minutes to open the scoring when Pittuck fired a shot under the visitors’ goalkeeper.
Shepherd could have had her first of the game moments later, curling towards the far corner but her shot cannoned back off the post.
A quick throw from Shepherd was then emphatically volleyed home by Graham before the hosts grabbed two quick-fire goals just after the half an hour mark.
Charlton’s commitment to playing out from the back reaped dividends when centre back Grace Coombs delivered a sublime through ball for our trialist to run onto and finish well.
Just a minute later, the front three linked up well as Graham, squared for Shepherd to tap home.
Maidstone pulled a goal back three minutes before the half when Megen Lynch charged out of her area but couldn’t get much on a header that fell to the away side’s captain Nicola Morris who lobbed keeper and Coombs.
Charlton four-goal lead was restored on the stroke of half time as Shepherd dispossessed a Maidstone defender and rounded the keeper for her second of the game.
Charlton kept applying the pressure in the second period but took 14 minutes before making it 6-1. Our trialist went close twice early on, seeing one shot saved and one rattle the woodwork.
Just before the hour mark, substitute Gemma Hyland was fouled and Pittuck took an extremely quick free kick short to Graham. The attacker’s 20-yard drive proved too hot for the Maidstone keeper to handle and nestled in the net.
Three minutes later Shepherd was felled in the penalty area when through and she dusted herself down to stroke the spot kick home to complete her hat-trick. She finishes pre-season with a record of 12 goals in just five appearances.
Another substitute Kylie Manktelow made it eight as she raced on to a Graham throughball to coolly convert one-on-one.
Graham finished off the rout with two more goals, finishing one-on-one with the keeper for her hat-trick.
With seven minutes remaining Charlton got into double figures after Sophie Blowers spread play wide for Pittuck, who beat Maidstone’s left back and fired in a cross that Graham stooped to head home.
The Addicks start their league campaign on Sunday (23 August) when they travel to the West Country to face Keynsham Town (2pm).
Charlton: Lynch, Houlihan, Singyard (Nash 51), Flack, Coombs, Rogers, Trialist (Blowers 69), Hardaker (Hyland 57), Graham, Shepherd (Kylie Manktelow 67), Pittuck.
