The Charlton women’s team slumped to a 3-1 loss to league leaders Gillingham at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Sunday.
The visitors started quickly and were a goal up within just six minutes, going into the break two goals to the good.
They made it three on the hour mark before Kristina Manktelow pulled one back for the Addicks but the long-range strike failed to spark a revival in their fortunes.
The Gills took the lead with the opening chance of the game; Nikita Whinnet cut past the diving challenge of Stef Simmons to whip in a cross. Goalkeeper Megen Lynch did well to get a hand to it but could only palm into a scrum of Gillingham players and Lisa Fulgence scored.
Watford loanee Fliss Gibbons then hit the top of the bar after her cross veered goalwards and Charlotte Gurr shot narrowly over from a free kick.
Charlton tried to probe their way back into the game but, for all their possession in defence and midfield, struggled to carve out many chances.
And it was the Kent side that made a further breakthrough as Gibbons went down under a challenge from Rosie Paye and Gurr made no mistake from the penalty spot.
The best chance of the half for hosts came after a Gibbons handball just outside the area but Simmons’s set piece curled narrowly wide of the upright.
Gillingham increased their lead again on 60 minutes when left back Danielle Carlton curled an effort into the top corner to make it 3-0.
Having been switched into the centre forward after Emma Harrison was withdrawn from the action, Manktelow steered home a 25 yarder that flew over the goalkeeper five minutes later.
The home side pressed to drag themselves back into the contest but it wasn’t to be and Gillingham took home the points.
