The Addicks suffered a narrow defeat at Brighton who now take over at the top of the league
Charlton travelled to the chilly coastline to take on Brighton in their penultimate league match.
The game got off to a good start with Brighton dominating possession but the Addicks having the territorial advantage.
Brighton rarely threatened in the opening stages and it was the reds who had the better of the chances.
After some neat build up play winger Megan Mulholland got the better of her marker and latched on to a precise through ball however spurned the chance failing to hit the target.
After weathering some pressure from the hosts Charlton countered quickly through a dynamic run from Francesca Tye carving her way through three players only to see her shot ricochet off the goalkeeper and fall to Olivia Cole who opted to pass rather than shoot only to see the ball trickle out of play. The half ended with no further incident.
The second half got underway and Charlton started fast and furious mounting serious pressure on the Brighton goal. This paid dividends as Ellie Searle won a corner on the left side of the pitch from which Captain Clare Rogers delivered a sumptuous ball into the middle on the penalty box meeting an on rushing Tye who smashed the ball into the back of the net on 48minutes.
Unfortunately the lead was short lived as The Seagulls Were awarded with a dubious free kick 25 yards from goal on the 52minute. As a result the scores were levelled as the free kick was well struck clearing the wall and nestling into the bottom left corner despite keeper Alex Bakers` best efforts to get across goal.
Isabel Hunter entered the fray replacing Beth Rodgers on the 70th minutes sparking a brief rejuvenation.
However the visitors worked tirelessly throughout the match and fell foul to fatigue as Cole was dispossessed centrally. The resulting through ball was met by a back line expectantly looking towards the assistant referee in claims for offside, this hesitation allowed the advancing striker to gain that crucial half a yard allowing her to get the shot off leaving Baker now chance of saving it (75 mins).
With nothing to lose The Addicks pushed for an equaliser as Jaime Welch making her league debut came on with 20 minutes remaining. Skipper Rogers and ever present Tye lead the rally but this was to no avail as Brighton stood resolute and firm holding on to a 2-1 victory seeing them swap places topping the league level on points ahead on goal difference with a game in hand.
Manager Warren Clarke had this to say " It`s a tough thing to experience and everyone is disappointed with the result but not the performance, however we must reflect on the game learn from the positives and negatives to make sure we come back stronger never to experience this again".
Charlton are in action for their final league game of the season Sunday 9th March away to Tottenham Reserves.
