The Charlton women’s development team were unfortunate not to take all three points as they fought out an evenly-matched 1-1 draw with Prince of Wales on Sunday at Sparrow’s Lane.
Despite suffering an early setback when goalkeeper and captain Fern Firkins had to be carried off injured, leaving them with outfield player Tyra Poole in goal, the Addicks led at the interval.
Ellie Richards converted a corner from player of the match Sophie Blowers just minutes before half time but the most unfortunate of equalisers secured the Folkstone-based side a share of the spoils.
Although a fairly close contest, it was the Addicks that carved out the more clear-cut chances, with Blowers shooting just over after good work from Poole, who started the game as the lone striker.
The best move of the game was started by Firkins in goal. She found Blowers, whose excellent through ball was met by the overlapping Evie Rose. The right back’s centre across the face of goal was dangerous but eluded everyone in red but was put behind for a corner. From the resulting set piece, taken by Lauren Gurney, Poole could only head straight at the keeper.
Prince of Wales’s direct style of play did penetrate the hosts’ defence a few times but their finishing was wayward for the most part. A through ball to their centre forward saw Firkins commit but fail to get the ball but the striker, who stayed on her feet, could only shoot into the side netting.
The Firkins came out to the edge of the area for a 50/50 challenge with the striker and came out worse off, leaving former Leyton Orient centre of excellence keeper Poole to take over.
Having wreaked havoc in the PoW defence with her electric pace, she settled comfortably between the sticks, although was rarely troubled throughout.
Just before half time a Rose throw in was fired goalwards on the turn by Gurney but struck the post. Just a minute later, though, Charlton took the lead, with almost the final kick of the half.
A corner from the impressive Blowers found Richards unmarked in the centre of the box and the midfielder found the bottom corner of the net.
Prince of Wales went on the attack in the second half, after what seemed a very short half-time team talk and Poole was forced to make an excellent save early on, tipping the ball round the post.
Up the other end, there were some excellent chances for the home side to extend their lead, with Alejandra Carreno Garzon teeing up Richards, whose spectacular volley was straight at the keeper.
Two PoW players then failed to get on the end of a good, low cross before their captain saw a free kick fly over the crossbar.
Blowers also had a good chance when her tireless running saw her dispossess a defender and advance on goal but her powerful attempt was brilliantly saved with one, strong hand by the away custodian.
Substitute Toon was the next to go close when she latched onto a ball over the top of defence but her shot from the right of goal trickled agonisingly past the wrong side of the post.
Then came the equaliser when a typical PoW long, innocuous-looking clearance was misjudged by Poole and bounced over her head and into the goal.
