The Charlton women’s team slipped out of the FA Cup at the third round stage after a 6-0 defeat to a clinical Sheffield FC team at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Sunday.
The visitors came into the game leading the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division, having won nine of their ten games so far, scoring an average of over four goals per match.
And they dominated the first 45 minutes, going into half time 4-0 up and missing few of the chances they created.
The first of those missed chances was a great Megen Lynch save as Jodie Michalska and Suzanne Davies combined to send Ellie Gilliatt through but Lynch kept the score goalless.
That didn’t last long, however, when Carla Ward beat the offside trap to chase down a through ball and stroke past Lynch into the far corner to open the scoring on 21 minutes.
Gilliatt then made the second just three minutes later, playing in Davies who fired over Lynch and in. It was three on the half hour mark as a blocked clearance found its way to Kerry Parkin to slot home at the near post.
Two minutes later Sheffield ended their prolific spell by making it four when captain Ward’s corner kick was headed home by Michalska.
Charlton had two excellent chances to get back into the game early on in the second period. Striker Sam Pittuck’s well-timed run saw her go one-on-one with the keeper but her shot trickled just wide of the far post.
Five minutes after, Emma Harrison won a free kick that was whipped in by Grace Coombs but Kit Graham’s headed also narrowly eluded the far post.
With those two chances, which were all that the hosts could muster, gone, Sheffield finished the game on 68 minutes when a free kick found its way to the left wing and the cross found an unmarked Michalska who tapped home.
With 15 minutes remaining, Davies’ close-range effort was superbly blocked by PHSC plc Player of the Match Katie Flack but the ball rebounded to Ward, who made it six.
From the kick off, Charlton gained an indirect free kick ten yards out thanks to a backpass but Graham took the set piece early and Coombs’ could only shoot lamely at keeper Claire Wallhead.
In injury time Flack again prevented a goal with a timely block but Sheffield saw their victory out with ease and will now go on to travel to FA Women’s Super League side Durham in the fourth round.
