The Charlton Athletic women’s team fell to a 5-0 defeat away at Lewes in their first game of the FA Women’s Continental Cup on Sunday.
It was a day to forget for manager Riteesh Mishra, who was missing several key players due to injury, with Kit Graham and new signing Gemma Bryan only fit enough to start on the bench. Charlotte Kerr and Lilli Maple made their Charlton debuts, while Ellie Bailes and Elizabeta Ejupi made their second debuts in the red and white.
Charlton started the game brightly, though, keeping possession and control of the ball. But just six minutes in, the Addicks gave a penalty away when Kerr nudged Avilla Bergin in the back. The former Charlton player dusted herself down and slotted home the spot kick home to open the scoring.
Charlton didn’t let their heads drop, as straight from kick-off Charlotte Gurr slipped through the Lewes defence, but her shot was just wide of the post.
Five minutes later Charlton were on the attack again, as Lewes goalkeeper Faye Baker poorly cleared the ball to the feet of Bailes. However Baker reacted quickly and tipped the midfielder’s shot just over.
The Addicks’ attacking persistence continued, with Nicole Pepper swinging in a cross that met the head of Ejupi, but her effort rattled the bar.
In the 22nd minute, against the run of play, Lewes got their second of the game as Danielle Lane headed in unmarked from a corner.
Charlton found it difficult to create any meaningful chances for the rest of the first half. Three minutes before the end of the first period, England U19 International Katie Startup made a fantastic save to deny Samantha Quayle’s thunderous strike.
Lewes got their third a minute before the end of the half, as a poor Charlton pass was intercepted. The ball was threaded through to Bergin who netted her second of the game.
The Addicks couldn’t get into their stride in the second half, and Startup was called into action again in the 57th minute. The 19-year-old did brilliantly to punch the ball over the bar from a powerful corner.
Five minutes later, a strong hand from Startup cleared the danger from another Lewes corner.
The Addicks had a chance in the 67th minute when Bryan cut the ball back to Gurr who fired over the bar.
Lewes added a fourth goal in the closing stages from a corner where Addicks keeper Katie Startup appeared to be fouled when claiming the ball and Cater finished from close range.
Lewes completed their victory in the 90th minute when Carter’s powerful strike found the back of the net.
Lineup: Startup, Kerr, Coombs, Espinosa (Graham 55), Clifford, Ejupi, Bailes, Pepper (Bryan 55), Maple (Wheeler 78), Churchill, Gurr. Subs (not used): Jackson, Pearch.
