The 1st team limped out of the London Cup after losing in the semi final away to two first half goals against Arsenal Reserves.

Report by David Brenchley

The Addicks were without top scorer Gemma Bryan through suspension and winger Ellie Bailes through injury as a Kirsty Linnet finish and a penalty from Lauren Bruton put the Gunners into the final.

Despite a couple of breaks from the ever impressive Fliss Gibbons, the visitors just did not show up in the first 45 minutes.

Emily Thompson and Taylor O’Leary both went close and Bruton really should have beaten Megen Lynch before Linnet put her side a goal up.

After 37 minutes, and the umpteenth through ball that evaded the Addicks defence, Linnet was played through, and adjudged onside, and she coolly finished.

It was not long before the hosts increased their lead when Thompson was played through, Becky Duggan brought her down and the linesman flagged for a penalty.

Bruton converted the resulting spot kick and her side missed a number of gilt-edged chances, but still went into the break 2-0 up.

Charlton were much improved in the second period as their opponents seemed to take their foot off the gas slightly.

Grace Coombs had their first two meaningful chances, set up by Charley Clifford and Jenny Newman respectively, which were both deflected over the bar by Arsenal defenders.

Charlton improved when Sam Rowland (pictured) and Fran Ali replaced Pam McRoberts and Clifford; the two youngsters looked lively and tried their hardest to create some openings but to no avail.

A Stef Simmons cross was almost fumbled by keeper Sophie Harris but that was the only time she was tested throughout the afternoon.

Gunners defender Hannah Short was lucky not to have been dismissed late on after a two-footed challenge on Kim Dixson, forcing the midfielder off with minutes to spare.

Charlton: Lynch, Flack, Simmons, Dixson (Sherwood 89mins), Duggan, Chandler, McRoberts (Rowland 63mins), Coombs, Gibbons, Newman, Clifford (Ali 68mins). Sub (not used): Ahern.
