After impressing in an unfamiliar position, Charley Clifford admitted she enjoyed playing at centre back in the Charlton womenís teamís 2-0 win over Gillingham.

Being a central midfielder by trade, Charley started the Premier League Cup last 16 clash at right back before being moved into the centre of defence when Jordan Butler came off injured after half an hour.

And, playing alongside the versatile Harley Bennett in a position she had only played whilst “mucking about in training”, she impressed enough to scoop the PHSC plc Player of the Match award.

She said: “I was happy with my performance considering I was pretty confused to start with! To begin with I found it difficult but as the game progressed, I got into it more and enjoyed it in the end.

“That was the first time in a competitive match. It was different, seeing I wasn’t used to playing there but they were the same principles as centre midfield really.

“To be honest, I really enjoyed playing there. If Paul wants me to play at centre back again I’ll play centre back!”

On the team’s performance, the 19-year-old was happy with the improvement in the second half and is looking forward to putting together a run in the competition beyond the quarter finals, where the Addicks face either Leeds United or Derby County.

“I think it was about the team so no-one really stood out,” she added. “We were all in it together and we won together. If we had lost we would have lost together.

“Hopefully we can start the next game how we finished the second half [against Gillingham] because we did start to battle at the end and we started to actually do something.

“If we can take that into the next round and the rest of the competition we will do alright. No Super League teams are in the League Cup so there is no reason why we can’t have a good run in it.”
