Almost four and a half months after finishing last season, the Charlton women’s Development team finally get their 2017/18 FA Women’s Premier League Reserve South campaign up and running when they travel to face Portsmouth Reserves on Sunday.
It’s been a busy pre-season for the Development and they signed off in impressive fashion, thrashing MK Dons’ second string 11-1 with new signing Georgia Griffin and Beth Weller netting a hat tricks.

And manager Luke Brown is excited to get back into competitive action on the south coast. “We’ve worked hard in pre-season and it’s been great to see what we’ve practised in training out on the pitch,” he said.

While he believes that if his players can put into practise what they’ve been working on in training on the pitch then “I can see a positive outcome on Sunday”, he is aware that “Portsmouth are a good side”.

While Charlton edged into second place in the FAWPL Reserve South last season on goal difference, Pompey were just two points behind in fourth place and, after their first team made moves in the transfer over the summer months, are bound to be in better fettle this term.

It’s something Brown says he “respects”, but has confidence in his own young side. “Portsmouth is always a tough tie,” he added. “It’s always a good battle between the two sides and it’s going to be tough for both teams.

“[But] overall, we’re all just looking forward to getting the season started after a long, hard pre-season – and I’m sure Portsmouth are, too.”

He declines to out a long-term target on his team’s shoulders, but says he has set “an outcome”, and “many targets to get to that outcome”. “We’re all on the same page and have all set individual goals, which I think is key for players’ development.

“Week by week we’ll try to reach those goals and hopefully that will help us achieve our outcome.”
