The Charlton women’s team will once again head to Portugal for a pre-season training camp in preparation for what could be an historic season.
Last year the Addicks travelled to Browns Club, Vilamoura in the Algarve for four days immediately prior to the start of the season, beating national champions A Dos Francos 5-1 whilst there.
And, after that successful excursion, they will repeat the experience at the start of August, before heading into the new season with the target of gaining promotion to the FA Women’s Super League for the first time.
They will play C.F. os Belenenes from Lisbon on Sunday 3rd August.
First team manager Stuart Weston said: “Last year was the first time we did it and it was a great time. I’m glad that we are fortunate enough to have the backing from our main sponsors PHSC plc to do it again this year.
“To be out there and to do the intensive training twice a day, it was about getting up at the right time, eating at the right times, eating the right things and then training together two sessions a day.
“And it was not just about the training – it’s the whole team-building opportunity. I think it works wonders just to bond the squad, there might be a few extra players coming in this time that don’t know the girls too well so it will be great for them.
“The facilities are fantastic out there and hopefully the girls can work hard when required like they did last year in training but then have that time to bond and relax off the pitch as well.
“I think it shows that we are serious about what we do here. It’s not just going to Portugal to have a jolly up, it’s about going out there and working hard – and they do.
“If they hadn’t done that last year, we wouldn’t be going back now. It’s because it was so successful last year and they worked so hard in every moment I asked them to and the result out there proved that.”
Despite the impressive tour victory, Charlton’s season did not start as expected, with an opening day win over West Ham followed by losses to Lewes and Gillingham and a draw with Tottenham.
This year, though, the camp takes place a fortnight earlier, allowing for two friendlies on English soil before the season starts in earnest with an away trip to Keynsham Town.
Weston hopes that will allow for a smoother transition into the season and help them get off to a good start.
“We wanted a little bit of time and a couple more friendlies before we started back in against English sides that are going to offer a different challenge to what they do in Portugal.
“I just wanted a bit of winding down time from the trip before we went into the season for real so the players were concentrating and that was behind them,” Weston added.
“Last year we beat West Ham first game but it was a bit of a close call and it’s always going to be a close call when you’re playing West Ham because they are one of our closest rivals.
“We just didn’t have that work rate that we had in Portugal, I think some of us thought it was going to be easy but it turned out to be a very hard league and very competitive.
“This year the girls will come in with the right mindset, we won’t be naïve like that, we’ll know that every game is going to be difficult and we’ve got to go out there and give the sort of work rate that we did towards the end of the season.”
